With the first ones imported, just about everything was wrong with them. However, as I see the upgrades that have been occurring in the St. Pete line, I feel that they are becoming more of a respectable tuba. My only criticism of the most recent St. Petersburg tubas is, that a raw nickel-plate finish just doesn't get it. Selmer and others used to sell some nickel-plated instruments, but they had lacquer over the nickel so they wouldn't tarnish, turning milky-looking. Also, the nickel finish is difficult to deal with when un-soldering and re-soldering during the course of repairs. A bottom bow is extremely difficult to remove from a St. Pete, and the finish is nearly impossible to repair afterward. I'd like to see them come in brass with a good lacquer finish, like the one I saw being used in the Leningrad orchestra during a latter 1970's US tour - what a dark, dark sound!
