How long did it take Mr. Herseth to become a legend? It didn't happen 50 years ago. Was he a legend in the 50's? Or did he acheive that status in the 60's? So maybe whoever wins will be a legend in, say, 15-20 years.

And this "perfect replacement" nonsense is artistically shortsighted crap. We are musicians. We are artists. That means we invest our music with a part of ourselves that is unique. But unlike Monet or Rembrandt, our art is temporal, and it changes from day to day, and hour to hour. So whoever the new principle trumpet of the CSO is, or any other high-profile gig, asking them to "play it like Bud" is selling that artist short. Bud already played it that way, and while certainly artistically excellent, it might not be the equally artistically excellent way that the new person feels it should be done.
