They aren't. But they help you get behind the screen in the first place, perhaps.
The tuba chair at National is an endowed chair, and the kind of gig someone works up to in their career. The committee would expect to draw from the best of currently working professionals, I would expect. When I hire an experienced engineer, what I want them to know from their experience they don't teach in school.
Even so, I'd bet that experience is more audible from behind the screen that one might imagine.
