My thought is that when you get into the league that the four finalists for National are in, the playing considerations are much more minute. To the point of being hair-splitting. By that point, it comes down to musical taste instead of execution. The flautist on the committee probably has somewhat differing musical tastes than the cellist. Given that the players all played superbly, certainly well enough to show that they are more than capable of playing anything that is put on the stand, then it becomes ALL about taste. It's not a question of who played better, it's a question of who played better according to the majority of the committee members individual tastes.

The point I made earlier about the resume is that by selecting the more experienced players to show up in the first place, the committee enhances its odds of getting the right player in the first shot, instead of having a two-year audition cycle like we saw in Boston.
