A trumpet student of mine bought a denis wick practice mute, and in the box was a paper with comments by Dennis Wick on using the mute not only when you need to practice or warm-up without being heard, but alslo as a way of improving your tone. Sort of like the batting donut theory. The idea in a nut shell is to practice with the practice mute in at very loud levels. Then when you take the mute out your tone is much fuller and stronger, and believe it or not it works!!! Just a thought. I found the same to be true in college where we had to practice in the little Wenger sound modules all the time. If you really worked on a good tone while practicing in one of those "refrigerators" as we used to affectionately call them, once you got out into a real room, your tone was amazing. ken k
