Now, now...

Isn't this akin to the practice of putting a belt around your bell? Don't laugh (yet). I've heard of players (real people, not just lore - although the names escape me) that used to strap a leather belt around their bell to "improve" the sound. From a physics standpoint, it makes sense - putting on a belt - or a hunk of lead in this case) will force a node, changing the harmonics of the horn. (Yes, I am a physicist too, although my physics is currently better than my playing :-)

BUT - doing that to a Hirsbrunner?!? I would think that with the precision with which those things are made (or at least mine was made) that they would have engineered the harmonics to make the horn sound its best. That's like tinkering with the engine of a Porsche - you'd best know what you're doing! Trying it on a Whaley-Royce on the other hand... ;-)
