Bring in guest stars as often as possible. My father started a town band out on Long Island in 1946. With the help of Bill Bell, he regularly brought in members of the New York Philharmonic as guest soloists, and milked it for all its publicity value. The no-doubt world-famous Monday Night band is still going today.

My traditional jazz band started bringing in guest trombonists back in 1971. Each guest brings a different personality to the band, and keeps us on our toes musically. We just celebrated our thirtieth anniversary of regular sunday night performances, and we all still look forward to it every week. (Visit us on the web at galvanizedjazz.com if you care to!)

Last week at the New York Brass Conference I heard a fine brass quintet called "Extension Ensemble". For their finale they brought in Mark Gould on trumpet. Great show!
