How do you quantify the Met as being a better orchestra than the BSO? I think that is a hard statement to make. The other thing is that Mr. Schmitz gets a lot of record revenues, Pops and BSO money AND the NEC position that the winner more than likely will also receive. The Met gets mainly only Met money, recording and Pops work is much more limited recording wise and no pops work, and a much more rigorous schedule to boot. Usually this position will help you land a college job, but not one as nice as the New England Conservatory.
