Whilst professor at the Carnegie-Mellon University, I equipped the CMU Symphonic Band with 6 BBb Imperial tubas, 2 Eb Triumphonic tubas, 1 F Imperial tuba, and 6 Imperial euphs. They were all four valve compensating instruments. The difference between the sound of the new tubas and euphs as compared to the old ones was really amazing. I spent about 5 years playing an Imperial BBb, three years playing the F Imperial ( it was just like the one Phil Catelinet used to premier the R V Williams Concerto with the LSO) and many years playing the Sovereign Eb tuba. There were some very good players in that band.
Dale Clevenger of the Chicago Symphony and Phil Myers of the NY Philharmonic played horn.
