Lee,

I was never in a Washington DC level band. (Those people play at a very high level and probably would never see combat unless our nation were in very serious danger.) I did serve in a non-DC Army band for two years in 1959-1960. To the best of my memory, there were Army bands attached to combat divisions, and those guys were often out in the field on training exercises without their musical instruments. A second type of band, like the one I was in, was attached to the Adjutant General Corps and played lots of honor guards, local parades, TV shows and other public relations activities. Quite naturally, I liked my assignment better than the "combat-ready" division bands.
