Tim,
My advice is - folk, don't try this at home! There is nothing cut-an-paste about this process. Yes, Bob Rusk found a procedure that worked very nicely with Holton BBb tubas, and that's great. I believe that he also didn't do some other horns, like Conns or Kings. About a year ago, I reluctantly cut a 1914 Conn BBb, fabricating a new leadpipe and receiver and leadpipe in the process, as well as replacing the 3 top pistons with a M-W Deck valve system. Chris Hite (the owner) and I had many conversations, studied, and took many measurements and calculations before starting this endeavor, and that continued throughout the process. Yes, it was a great success, but to do any other cut project would be another unique experience, unless I found another of that same make and model. Anyone out there have a pre-1920 Conn BBb with a 19 1/2 inch bell and about .750" bore that you'd like to sell . . . .
