Writing music for tuba is not difficult. Writing *good* music for tuba, or any other instrument is what's difficult. Solo rep for the tuba is kind of like the New York City skyline: lots of perfectly servicable buildings dominated by a few spectacular skyscrapers towering over the rest.

I would suggest that TUBA utilize some of the commission monies to engage some of the most commercially successful composers of our day - the movie composers. John Williams has already provided us with a great concerto; now how about getting some stuff from Horner, Goldsmith, Elfman, etc.? The tie-in to the journal is to interview the composer about the composition.

That's not to say that commissions should not be awarded to lesser-known composers. But if the tuba is to gain true public acceptance as a solo instrument to the extent that we can expect to see a tuba guest soloist with our local symphony, then we need good compositions that also give name-recognition.
