I own a very old Czech (see Ace's posting) mellophone in just about pristeen condition. At first glance, it looks like just another crummy Eb mellophone with 3 pistons, but it is in C. Also in the case are Bb and A crooks that jam in the mouthpipe ala natural horns of old.

It plays poorly in Bb and A but remarkably well in C. There is an alto-ish mouthpiece included, but it plays better with a very very small (22D) Bach trombone mouthpiece. It doesn't require much though to realize how a tuba player with BBb, CC, and F and bass/treble clef reading skills can pick a set of fingerings and a clef and have fun with Mozart horn concertos, etc. (as written for horn) on this instrument.

I guess I am pushing the envelope for staying on topic, but it is an 8 foot long C instrument - like your kaiser baritones of which you speak - and it is LOADS of fun to play.
