I've been building the stereo in my car over the past few years, and I finally have exactly what I want. I'm pushing around 164 dB's when I show off to my friends, or for any car shows. For an increase of 10 dB's you have to double your volume, so you can imagine how loud that is. From what I've come to understand, the bass sound isn't what harms your ears, and rarely causes hearing loss. On the other hand, exposure to high frequencies at extended periods of time, can cause permanent hearing loss. I don't know that play tuba for 40 years would cause any damage to your hearing, but I can imagine that a principle violinist might experience some problems, or perhaps anyone sitting in front of the trumpet section.

My 2 cents.
