N.B. Bass sounds are just as able to harm your hearing as treble sounds.
It is simply an illusion that a higher (or harsher) sound is more damaging... it may be more "irritating" but any part of the aural spectrum is able to do damage if it is either loud enough*, and/or sustained over a regular or long period**.
* e.g. ONE event can cause permanent damage (e.g. a gunshot)
** This is relevant to factory workers with the drone of machinery, AND to musicians working regular loud shows (and they do not need to be constantly loud). Repeated exposure = lack of recovery time for your ears.
