Yes you're pretty much correct on that. I am really emphasizing harmonics in the existing sound and altering them, like a tuvan singer would. I wouldn't consider it an illusion of pitch because it actually exists. A whole series of resultant tones come in, not just a single resultant frequency, when blended with the vocal vibration.
