Eb in orchestral setting

Much has been made of the Eb tuba's general versatility when compared to an F tuba. Indeed, as I am about to purchase a small horn to complement my PT-6, I find myself wondering if an Eb would give me a more versatile than an F. HOWEVER, my goal is to play in a major symphony orchestra, and I have not heard of anyone in recent memory winning an audition with an Eb as a high horn. That doesn't mean it can't be done, of course, but it makes me wonder if the audition committees are looking for an F sound in favour of an Eb. Is there that much of a differance in sound?
It seems to me that most professionals use F horns in orchestral settings as well. Is this just habit, or is there something more to it? Can an Eb hold its own as an orchestral bass tuba in today's market?
Thanks,
Rob
