I am playing the VW Sea Symphony this weekend. The part is a killer with at three octave range from pedal D (pedal on the Eb tuba) to high Db above the staff. There are times in the score when it is very low and loud that I wish I had a bigger horn. But there are some pretty exposed parts that are up high so it is a trade off. The really loud and low stuff is doubled by basses and bass bone so I do not have to be incredibly loud while the high stuff is pretty exposed. For me the familiarity with my Eb pitch center and high range outweighs the sound I would have in the contra range with my BBb.
