Whether or not there is an epidemic liquidation of orchestras and professional bands, I cannot say, nor does that impact my reasons for playing the tuba. Like others, I thoroughly enjoy the feel of the horn and for being part of the foundation of our community concert band. I also have a day job I don't intend on giving up in the near future. I spent 30 years away from the horn because of a debillitating sense of perfectionism that colored my professional aspirations and I missed the horn. Now I play not to be Arnold Jacobs, Gene Pokorny or Pat Sheridan, but because it feels so good to be "back home" after being gone for so long. The fact that I can play my tuba Now and that I can Share that music with others both on stage and in the audience is more than I could have hoped for a couple of years ago. And in another 100 years, it is safe to assume that my playing days will be over anyway.
