To answer your question directly: yes, I had a Willson F that displayed those same endearing tendencies. I grew up/still play Alexes, so I learned to use the first slide for some and lip for others early on. But the Willson was so far out lipping was next to impossible. I hated that. But, when I sat down in a quintet to rehearse or perform, I got over my reluctance to use weird fingerings quickly--if I hadn't , I would soon find myself unemployed.
