So I was in the Woodwind and Brasswind in NYC the other day and got the chance to try out a bunch of new horns for the first time in years. What fun!! I learned a lot: (1) I still prefer rotary valves no matter what all the cool people play, (2) I really DID luck out with my 20 year old 3/4 Rudi Meinl, and (3) the VMI Mel Culbertson Neptune 6/4 CC makes me very, very happy.
Unfortunately, the congenial, trumpet-playing salesman was not aware of the differences between the two leadpipes which come with the Neptune, and I had neither the time nor inclination to unwrap the second leadpipe on the just-shipped tuba and try it out.
Does anyone out there know the differences between the two leadpipes and their intended effects on response/sound/intonation/everything?
