The rotary-valve Marzan tubas that were on the market in the early 70's had unusually short leadpipes, due to the diagonal configuration of the valveset. If you ask around you can probably find someone who still has one. Fred Marzan's gimmick was to make the main tuning slide accessible to the left hand. That caused some strange intonation quirks.
In my opinion, short leadpipes tend to cause flat open E (on a CC instrument) or open D on a BBb horn. Does anybody know of an exception to that rule?
