I've got the opposite thing, the left eye which the bell covers, is nearly perfect though a bit far-sighted, and slightly astigmatic. My right eye, which does most of the work, reading the music, and watching the conductor, requires strong correction for astigmatism and farsightedness. I wear a pair of bifocals to correct the astigmatism, and permit reading - as a civilian. I have a special pair of glasses for playing that bring the music on a stand into sharp focus. The maestro tends to be a little blurry, but hey, maybe that's just as well.

I recall Don Butterfield's observations about this. We even spoke about it on a couple of occasions.

My conclusion - heredity, but it pays to keep our minds, and eyes open.
