To my knowledge vibrato is not the main purpose of "shaking the string hand" (assuming that this is what you're talking about) on stringed instruments, though of course vibrato is sometimes the goal. The main purpose is to sustain the note played. It is very tough to sustain notes on fretless instruments, especially if the strings are narrow. This is even the case for amplified stringed instruments. I have a fretless guitar--talk about some hand-shaking on that thing. Marc
