Joe, I understand about the fifth partial flatness making up for the 1-2 combination sharpness. But are you saying that compensating systems lengthen the 1-2 combination in general, i.e. even without the fourth valve pressed? My experience with them (my father-in-law's euphonium vs. my old one, specifically) is that the 1-2 combination on his horn is no different from the one on a non-compensating system...until the fourth valve is pressed. I would think that playing a 1-2 B natural on either system is the same.

So what, precisely, did I miss here? I'm still confused.
