ever notice how trumpet players have bags full of mutes? different mutes offer different timbre changes. most tubists use straight mutes or in some cases cup mutes, but for our purposes, it really doesn't matter, does it? as long as it is quiter, or lets us get really harsh sounds at mezzo volumes, it works.

practice mutes are a differnent story. they are intended to block off as much sound as possible, so that you can practice in a space without bothering those near you. my parents recently moved to a townhouse and on my visits I pop in the mute and I won't bother the neighboors. there is a wide variety of practice mutes.

try out as many mutes as possible before you buy. remember: a normal mute will not function effectively as a practice mute, and vice-versa.
