It also helps to have a piano (or another musician) nearby to help practice hearing how to tune, besides just seeing how to tune (which is still beneficial, seeing how tuners don't lie).

If you do that, don't just practice tuning unison notes or octaves -- practice intervals, too. 5ths (and 12ths, etc) are easy to hear, and gradually move on to fourths, thirds, major 7ths, and whatever else pops up. In a resonant, echo chamber-type room, you can even tune to your own reverb, with short pairs of notes -- which becomes verrry interesting.
