Do-It-Yourself re-lacquer

My son attends a high school whose current budget makes it difficult in keeping instruments in somewhat decent playing condition. They definately have no money for re-condition. He is playing the school's marching baritone that has most of its lacquer gone. Every practice he comes home with green hands.

I did clean it up a bit and it appears that it will clean up fairly nice. I therefore got the director's permission to "play" with it, including re-lacquer, if feasible.

Therefore my question is: "Should I and if so, any suggestions". Keep in mind here the intend is not to restore it to "like-new" condition, just make it look at little nicer on the field.
