It's a good question, and of course the answer is to keep the horn in the hard case. If there is no hard case, I'm not sure a stand is the answer. Many stands are not any more stable than setting the horn on it's bell, and they can scratch up the sides of the horn. Unless your daughter is playing football in her room, keeping the horn in its bag should be enough protection for for the dorm room.
Does the music building at her school have a locker that she can use? I doubt if she will be allowed to practice in her room anyway, most dorms frown on that.
