I agree. Those little Yamahas are very very resonant instruments. They will vibrate out of your lap long before you over blow them(if you have the right approach). If you could strap a couple more valves on 'em to adjust for low register intonation they would probably make *great* quintet horns.
I think they are a great choice for middle school. Although the three valve king would be my first choice; I think they are a bit more balanced. The original poster shouldn't feel like they are being held back by the horn in his/her community band. You could do much worse.
