Good points, Rick.

I'm struggling to understand exactly what the mechanism is with monsterweights. (I hate using something that I don't understand). My overall impression was that the weights simply lowered the resonant frequency of the valve system and reduced reinforcement of higher-frequency components, thus giving more "core" to the sound. So the type of the added material would be largely irrelevant.

But if the mechanism is one of tailoring the tuning the system by adding components that exhibit resonance at specific frequencies, then we might benefit by an adjustable system of add-on components, each tuned to a specific frequency. Then good hard nickel-steel alloys or hard bronzes might be the best choice and perhaps better than simple slugs, shapes in the form of tuning forks or some such might be most effective.

Whatcha think?
