Hey Slim-
I grew up playing Conn 20J's, I haven't played one in about 25 years, and I still hate them. They are probably the reason that I like rotary valve german horns so much (and yes, I did oil the blasted things about twice a day). Intonation problems, ergonomic annoyances, the whole beat-up-school-horn thing really turned me off to them. Yes, they can have a big sound, but so does a freight train...
I think that Rick said it right when he called them something like a "laptop sousaphone".
I am always amazed that they fetch such good prices on auction sites. I guess it is a good thing that other people like them so much, I suppose it keeps the universe in balance.
