A lot depends on where you are working as a teacher. One thing that you should be aware of, is not just the starting salary in a school district, but the top-end salary (and how fast you get there!). Here, in the suburbs of New York City, some top end salaries are higher than $100,000 (after working there forever, and having a Masters + 60 credits, or a Doctorate).
The great thing about teaching, is that it gives you time to perform on the outside, as well.
