Reading all of these posts about this book I think I'm going to go get a copy and see what it's like. A jazz section? I know that's hard to find in a tuba book. Matt, the books you mentioned are all great. But to this dad, I think he should wait a little while before giving them to his son. He might want to try them though. Once he gets back in the feel of things. I don't think the etudes, like the Concone, should really be considered too easy. If played correctly, they still have an advanced difficulty. But, those books are the bibles of great tuba players and should be played at sometime during every tuba players career. I also agree with your fingering chart advice. With the Rubank, he could supplement the chart with one off of this site. So it's not too big of a concern that the book has 4 valve combinations.
