Many of us oldies have difficulty tuning dark timbres, but can tune brighter sounds because of the added higher harmonic content. As a bass guitarist, I sometimes have to pop strings just to get enough higher harmonic content to be able to tune, especially if room acoustics absorb the treble in the sound. Brighter tuba tones are generally easier to tune than extremely dark, bassy ones. Distance from a low bass instrument like tuba can affect the listener's perception of the harmonic content enough to make it difficult to accurately tune.
