Circling back to the "sound defined by audition committees" thing, I really believe that most tuba players who play the huge tubas [professionally] in orchestras are playing these B.A.T.'s that were NOT the instruments they used to audition and win their jobs.

I honestly believe that the timbre of the orchestral tuba sound is paid far less attention to by conductors/music directors than we tuba players like to believe. The tuba (though loud and large) is possibly the least paid-attention-to instrument in the orchestra, as long as the players count their rests properly, mash the correct buttons, and play within 10 cents of in-tune. (Argue otherwise if you wish, but I believe this is correct.)

We are now (last few years) seeing the first "round" of applicants who actually consistantly audition with B.A.T.'s, and I really don't think the audition committees are noticing.
