In terms of learning exerpts, I would definitely listen to recordings of the full pieces. It puts your part into perspective, so when you play just your part, the whole piece is playing in your head, and playing the tuba part becomes a lot easier. And don't play the exerpts like they're solos, unless the part is marked 'solo.' Play it as you would play it in the back row of the orchestra. Breathe when you'd breathe back there. Don't try to be a hero and hold the low Z's and FFF without taking a breath any longer than you would with the brass section playing along with you.
