Along those same lines, the strings were strung with gut, not steel and weren't as lound either.

The trumpets may have been keyed bugles, notably softer than modern trumpets. Even if they were cornets a pistons, they didn't have nearly the power of modern trumpets. Even the natural trumpet (or slide trumpets) of the day were peashooters.

Natural horns were likely used. Not only do you have to be softer to favor some of the harmonics, they were peashooter, too.

My point is that playing a larger, modern instrument may do no more than preserve the originally intended balance.

No one knows for sure so, unfortunately, it's left up the the conductor to decide.
