what the music sounds like before you come in, and learn how to fit you part with it when it's time. Listen for the rhythmic pattern YA-da-da, ya-da-DA...it always comes on beat one. Listening to a recording and following your part are the best ways to do it. If you do this enough, you'll know the music well enough that you hardly have to count rests at all.
