These days, the larger the mouthpipe and the larger the bore (in proportion to the body) the better an instrument is perceived to be - by both manufacturers and consumers of "professional grade" tubas.

This reduces resistance, and renders instruments harder to control.

Resistance is one of the most important characteristics of a wind instrument's playability and is essential in controlling tone, crescendos, diminuendos, legato playing, flexibility, and bending out-of-tune pitches where they belong.

For some reason, many of today's manufacturers believe that additional wall thickness adds resistance back where it was taken away by distorting bore sizes too large. This belief is humbug.
