There were versions of the removable bell tubas and baritones that were sold under the name "Caravelle Commuter." The feature here was that they had a case for the body only and two bells- one brass and one fiberglass. The student kept the fiberglass bell at home. The brass bell stayed at school. That way, the student only had to carry the body of the horn back and forth. If memory serves me well, this was a late '60's, early '70's thing.
