Ketchup?

One of the older tuba players in our community band says he uses ketchup to clean his tuba. It's raw brass and always looks just great! He says when he was a cook in the Army, they used copius amounts of ketchup to clean the insides of large copper and brass cooking vessels. Just for grins, I applied a small spot of ketchup to a place on one of my raw brass horns it after 30 minutes wiped it off and the patina was gone... leaving a nice shiney brass surface. I would guess that is it the combination of the acids in tomatoes and vinegar that does it. Has anyone else heard of this?
