A commonly known home solution for cleaning raw brass is a mixture of flour, salt, and vinegar. Make a paste of equal parts of flour & salt and enough vinegar to give it a good consistency. Spread it in and let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe off. I hava also been told that just salt and vinegar, slightly heated, works well too. It washes off with water and works well. These ingredients are likely to be less expensive than Ketchup.
