I, too, have played on some terrible horns, and getting a new horn did help me to make many improvements. However, looking back, I cant help but to think that perhpas some of the battle was just a mental block, which the new horn helped me to overcome. I've also had similar experiences with one of my students. Also, sometimes, I find that if you are not exactly precise with your fingers and the air flow, that delay you referred to may occur. Try playing some slower, middle range passges, and see if you can really focus on being precise with your valve motion and air flow. Just my humble thoughts...
