May I suggest New Brunswick as an alternative to northern Michigan. The salmon fishing is on a bit of a "down" but we do have some of the best small-mouth lakes on the continent.
Not to mention a small but enthusiatic tuba community, a desire to welcome new businesses, and the world's best beer (Moosehead, of course).
