Gotta get into this one.... The KEY of the tuba does not make it EASIER to play in one key or another. If there is a problem, it's with the performers deficiencies in extreme keys, NOT the tuba. The more important issue is the SIZE of the tuba. A B.A.T. is completely out of place in a brass quintet, as is a 184 in most large orchestral setting. A high quality 4/4 is the best all around instrument for band, orchestra, quintet and solo playing. I thibk the BBb is difficult to use in MOST solo settings as the instruments do not have the responsiveness to execute much of the literature. MANY BBb's are just not good INSTRUMENTS and would be difficult to play ANYWAY. I'm to the point in my teaching career if a student wants to study with me, they have to buy a CC, Eb or F tuba.
