Since it sounds like you haven't seen what I'm talking about, I'll describe it a little further.
1) the 2nd valve slide is on the left side of the horn.
2) the back plates on the valves face the audience, so the linkage winds up on the side of the horn toward the player. This also gives the longer down throw that you describe.
3) the valves are toward the bell side of the horn.
It's almost as if the entire valve system from lead pipe to main tuning slide was removed and reversed. That's what led me to ask if this is a normal Alex layout. The guy that owns it thinks it's from the late 60's or early 70's, so it doesn't have string. This is the first time I've seen this, but it seems like such a "doable" fix that I'll be REALLY surprised if this horn is unique. I hope not, cuz I really liked that Alex.
