This is border line, but there was a post asking about the new Meinl Weston 2000 tubas. Several just arrived at Dillon Music today. See Sean's great links under Shops and Organizations for Dillon's and many other fine businesses.
1. I don't know the price yet, and wouldn't say over a BBS anyway. Steve Dillon said he hasn't done all the DM to dollars coversions. It's been a zoo today. However, it WILL be more expensive than a stock 2155.
2. Anyway, here is a preliminary report from a fellow amatuer tubist. It is basically a Meinl Weston 2155. It IS lighter and supposedly the branches were all hand made (hammered instead of hydraulicly formed for uniform thickness). The 5th valve has been rotated 90 degrees and there is a wider tuning slide crook. Thus, the 5th slide is less in the way, and the bottom valve caps are easier to get to. Also, it yields a more refined appearance. It seems freer blowing too? The bottom 3rd valve slide is a reverse flow design with long ferrules that get the slide out of the way to service the rotor. The leadpipe enters the 1st valve from the top instead of at a 45 degree angle. That means a slightly longer leadpipe and sits the horn at a more relaxed, sit back angle. The slightly longer leadpipe also means the main tuning slide is up a little higher and will not hit your leg while you play. Expect the same predictable fine intonation as before, because the branch tapers stayed the same. The 2000's that we received are all in bright silver. I think one of the best all around 4/4 tubas just got even better! Plays and sounds EVEN MORE refined. Oh yeah, the 2 large ferrules on the bottom bow are engraved with the Statue of Liberty, and the NYC skyline. There is also a more subdued engraving on the bell. This is exciting to hear hear about improvements to horns like the legendary HB2P, and now the 2000 (2155) model Meinl Weston. To live in a day where tubists actually have a choice in so many great tubas, we are lucky. Matt, the amatuer tubist.
