This is what we learn from experience. Tuning is not so much a matter of precisely matching the oboe player, but of fitting in to the overall pitch that emerges as the orchestra joins in. If you're fortunate to play with an orchestra that listens to itself, it's practically autopilot. I've made it a practice to wait a moment before asserting myself. When I do come in, it generally puts the bottom on things. The other thing is hearing your part in relation to what's going on around you. It's not just the trombones, and we have to learn when to lead and when to follow. In the orchestra, we are the principal 95% of the time, but the real art is following someone else's lead with regard to style, dynamics, note lengths, etc., as though it were our own. And our ears and our senses must be comprehensive. For this, personal experience is the only teacher.
