Same way you do in any other ensemble situation. Give and take. If there is an obvious leader such as first trumpet, a soloist, or the violins, then follow them. If you and the trombones are center stage then everyone will lean towards you. To the listener, the majority is usually correct. So if 50 strings and a woodwind section have one idea, and your first trumpet has another, then you may have to pick your battles.
